Introduction to Vetiver Grass and the Vetiver System (VS)

“Metiver” in Paramin

The Vetiver Education & Empowerment Project (VEEP) was created to introduce vetiver grass to Paramin to help solve many major issues such as slope stabilization, erosion, and to help with soil and water conservation in agriculture. Once the project began, it was discovered that vetiver grass actually used to exist in Paramin long ago. But over time, the knowledge got lost and almost all vetiver was killed off using chemical herbicides by those who where unaware of its value. Among those who have memory and knowledge about this unique plant, it is commonly called by its local name... Metiver.

Taking Root in Canaries

Taking Root in Canaries by Lawrence Dupuis

In September 2018 members of the coastal town of Canaries in St Lucia participated in a short training program to learn about use of the humble vetiver plant as simple, green and cost effective tool to tackle many land and water related challenges. This is possible through the deep and fibrous root system of vetiver grass which can grow to 10 feet in 2 years, making it effective to help with slope stabilization and erosion control, soil and water conservation, infrastructure and riverbank protection.

While having an even wider range of other human uses - some less known and still to be explored...

REthinking Energy Video Series - The Opportunity Cost (5 mins)

REthinking Energy is a new video series produced by IAMovement in Trinidad & Tobago, in partnership with the National Gas Company (NGC). It represents one of the most comprehensive and wide spreading educational campaigns for the citizens of T&T on our country's energy situation, past and current, in recent history; where high level information and data is being broken down into bite-sized and digestible form via short videos for the average member of public to access, learn, and become 'fluent' in.

The REthinking Energy Video Series is comprised of three (3) short infographic videos each 5-7 minutes long with the intent of educating the public of T&T on these critical matters of energy:

  1. Video 1: T&T’s natural gas shortage, and our Opportunity Cost (which can also be thought of as Our Opportunity Lost).
  2. Video 2: The Electricity Subsidy
  3. Video 3: Solutions for T&T, guided by the MEEI-EU Sustainable Energy Roadmap 2021-2030
