The Vetiver Network West Indies (TVNWI)

The Vetiver Network West Indies (TVNWI) project was developed based upon a recognized growing interest amongst other Caribbean islands for vetiver grass and Vetiver System (VS) solutions, to support the ever-present need which is common to almost all terrains throughout the region for cost-effective and sustainable solutions to deal with issues of landslides, erosion, topsoil loss, and soil and water degradation.

After early work with the Vetiver Education & Empowerment Project (VEEP) model commenced in Trinidad & Tobago by Vetiver TT EES Ltd, the Paramin Development Committee (PDC) and IAMovement – when this project was promoted and shared online through various media publications, IAMovement received contact from stakeholders across 6-7 other Caribbean islands inquiring to know more about vetiver grass, and how programmes like the VEEP model could be brought to their countries.

In addition, where Vetiver TT and IAMovement were already linked to the global TVNI (The Vetiver Network International), with their co-founder Mr. Jonathan Barcant serving as a director of the Board and Representative of TVNI for the Caribbean, both organisations shared the same goal of TVNI as it pertains to promoting knowledge and access to vetiver grass and Vetiver System (VS) solutions in communities across the region. Thus some levels of work and research had already been done on the historical and modern day presence and uses of vetiver grass across other Caribbean countries.

In light of the growing regional interest, and clear need and opportunities which were recognized for vetiver grass across Caribbean countries, the decision was made to form a network to sustain ongoing connectivity and knowledge sharing amongst communities and stakeholders, to help support and ensure that one day this marvellous plant and all of the social, economic and environmental benefits that come with it would accessible to all. Thus, The Vetiver Network West Indies (TVNWI) was born.

The launching of the platform and network was initially made possible through support from the British High Commission in Port of Spain who provided funding to IAMovement for this effort. Importantly, this allowed for development and creation of the TVNWI website – but the 2018 project also supported direct visits and outreach to the islands of Dominica, Saint Lucia and Antigua, where various forms of stakeholder outreach and public consultations were done to introduce and share more on vetiver grass and the VEEP model, and to explore interest by farmers, community members, local development partners and members of the public to be part of future initiatives to help bring vetiver solutions to their islands. These efforts were very successful – and where through other forms of support and partnership, some of these early outreach efforts were able to expand during this very same year to include direct training and Vetiver System (VS) implementation initiatives on the ground, in particular in Saint Lucia, where a first condensed VEEP initiative was carried out in the community of Canaries. From this effort a short film was captured to share more about vetiver grass and its role in communities with others locally and regionally, which was called ‘Taking Root in Canaries’.

Taking Root In Canaries

Although introductory public conversations and discussions only were had in Dominica and Antigua during this project, the strong interest and feedback nonetheless allowed for the development of an eventual new and larger project which started in 2020, called Grassroots4LaVie. This project built directly upon the 2018 TVNWI project and connections made to partners and stakeholders previously made on the ground, but where IAMovement worked alongside the regionally well-established IICA, who had also supported community outreach efforts in the Kalinago Territory of Dominica in 2018, to develop a proposal and eventual successful project with the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF).

Grassroots4LaVie was able to further expand and strengthen and work and goals of The Vetiver Network West Indies (TVNWI) by directly strengthening regional knowledge and access to vetiver grass – and where this project and the specific developments across the participating Caribbean countries can be explored in greater detail on the website.

Now today, the Vetiver Network West Indies serves a regional platform to support sustainable land management and environmental conservation throughout the West Indies, centering its work around the Vetiver System (VS)—as a technique that utilises the vetiver plant (Chrysopogon zizanioides) to prevent soil erosion, stabilise slopes, manage wastewater, and restore degraded lands.
