Organic gardening activities with SERVOL Junior Life Centre Cascade.

Following past years of relationship and different extra-curricular and upliftment activities hosted at SERVOL Junior Life Centre in Cascade by IAMovement, a more sustained programme was developed to support gardening education and growth activities by SERVOL students. This was made possible primarily through support from the Rotary Club Port of Spain.

Over the course of several years, IAMovement hosted gardening activities at SERVOL Cascade on a weekly basis, with varied participation based on student interest – since the sessions were not mandatory. During this time we were able to see several students develop keen interest and passion for gardening, where their knowledge and experience with different methods of taking care of plants and crops using organic approaches were learned. In 2019, where IAMovement was able to implement a large trial organic farm plot at U-Pick farms in Chaguaramas, IAMovement was pleased to facilitate a group of 10 students from SERVOL joining for this activity during a United Way Day of Caring event with Scotiabank. Following this, several students and their families continued to participate at the organic farm plot on a weekly basis as crops grew and matured. This was carried out for just one crop cycle but turned out to be a wonderful, connective and learning opportunity for all, with many organically grown delicious crops enjoyed along the way.
