Scotiabank United Way National Day of Caring 2017

In 2017, IAMovement partnered with Scotiabank to coordinate, plan and implement an impactful National Day of Caring Event for 800+ Scotiabank staff volunteers at four (4) community and environmentally focused projects and areas across Trinidad & Tobago.

In 2017, Scotiabank in Trinidad & Tobago took an important step in deciding that they wished to contribute directly to betterment and upliftment of the natural environment, and communities which work to support greater environmental sustainability – as their primary contribution on the United Way National Day of Caring in T&T. Recognizing IAMovement’s wide experience in this area, a partnership was formed to develop a range of project activities in the north, central and south parts of Trinidad as well as in Tobago.

Given that IAMovement is an organization which is not constrained to one geographic area, but rather aims to support positive upliftment of people and environment in all locations – it does so through partnerships, with other groups and organizations which are based in the respective areas that it aims to bring support to; and this approach was taken for the United Way National Day of Caring event with Scotiabank in 2017.

IAMovement connected Scotiabank staff volunteers with four (4) communities and other organizations across T&T – who together contributed to tree propagation and reforestation, sustainable agriculture, school gardens, vetiver grass nursery development for land restoration purposes, and the upliftment of a key nature attraction site in Tobago through tree planting and the supply and installation of public benches.

These projects saw 800+ volunteers getting involved for an impactful day of activities, with the following partners and locations:

Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FARCP) in St Ann’s, North Trinidad – 150+ Scotiabank and IAMovement volunteers propagated hundreds of seedlings for reforestation activities in the Northern Range of Trinidad, led by the FACRP.

Wa Samaki Ecosystems in Freeport, Central Trinidad – 300+ Scotiabank and IAMovement volunteers got their hands dirty helping to develop new sites at Wa Samaki – which is a sustainable agricultural community project that focuses on permaculture practices, topsoil regeneration and healthy, local and organic agriculture. The support of dedicated volunteers helped to expand Wa Samaki gardens, plant trees, and grow the organization’s ability to continue its ongoing educational programmes for citizens of Trinidad & Tobago.

Vetiver nursery and Icacos Primary School Garden in Icacos, South Trinidad – 200+ Scotiabank and IAMovement volunteers helped to install a vetiver nursery which would eventually produce some 50,000 vetiver plants for use in land regeneration activities across Trinidad & Tobago – and, also contributed to the establishment of a community vegetable garden at the Icacos primary school.

Organic gardening and No-Man’s land upliftment activities in Tobago – 100+ Scotiabank and IAMovement volunteers got their hands dirty at a large, intentional organic gardening project – learning and taking home plants to nurture on their own; and also helped to install public benches and several trees at No Man’s land in Tobago, which is a public beach site receiving local and foreign tourists after visits to the Buccoo Reef and Nylon Pools.
